    Fellow Lions!

Thank you for allowing me the honor of serving as your District Governor for the 2013 and 2014 year. I promise to do my best to deliver results as outlined in my action plan for the year. As you know plans are made, events happen and modifications to the plan are made to fit the needs as they arise. My plan is targeted at helping our clubs and district "Build, Support, Promote and Sustain" our organization into the future. Plan is available on District 49A website.

Our accomplishments as Lions to contribute to our communities in a "World of Service" is unequaled and envied by many. And, in order to further our cause and perpetuate our legacy we need to ensure we have a sustainable future. I truly believe that we must reflect on our past experiences and impress them upon others if we are to grow and thrive.

Membership growth and retention efforts will be a priority as are our youth. You'll see a great deal of training opportunities at our Mid-Winter Conference including a joint training effort facilitated and recommended from both sub districts and supported directly from LCI supporting "membership growth". You'll also see some diversity in other opportunities such as "Social Media" and association with some new organizations. And, don't forget our third annual "Leadership Academy", which will be held in January.

As we share our organization and it's incredible opportunity with others around the state it will be important to remember that it is hard to get anyone to join our elite group of volunteers who serve our towns unless you ask them to become part of it.

So be excited and "Just Ask"!

    Lion Lewis Quinn
    District Governor 49A (2013-2014)

    Wednesday, January 30, 2013 ---- 2012-2013 District 49A Peace Poster Contest Winner.

LCI has announced that Molly Rardin of Stellar Secondary School has been chosen as one of 23 merit award winners of the 25th annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest. Stellar was sponsored by the Mt. McKinley Lions through their co-chair Walt Hays.

The 23 merit award winners are from Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Cyprus, Ecuador, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Nigeria, Philippines, Republic of South Africa and the United States (Alaska, Hawaii, Minnesota, Missouri, Oregon and West Virginia). The grand prize winner will be announced at Lions Day with the United Nations on Friday, February 1.

About 400,000 children from 55 countries participated in this year's Peace Poster Contest. The posters were judged at club, district and multiple district levels before reaching the international level, at which point they were narrowed down to 117 posters. Based on creativity, originality and portrayal of the theme, Imagine Peace, Molly's entry was chosen as one of 23 merit award winners. As such, Molly will receive US$500 and a certificate of merit.

Monday, January 14, 2013 ---- Eagle community School is Raising Funds to send Class Seniors to Washington D.C. in March

High School Seniors of Eagle Community School in Eagle, Alaska would like to take part in an in-depth demonstration of the Democratic process through hands-on participation in March, 2013.

Traveling to Washington, D.C. is very expensive ($500 for each student to attend 'Close Up'), and these students are working hard to raise money to fund their trip by holding bake sales and raffles. They are looking to Lions for support to help them reach their fundraising goals.

    Monday, November 26, 2012 ---- 2012-2013 District 49A Peace Poster Contest Winner.

When some people think of peace they think of no sadness, no anger, or pain. To me we still have all these feelings we simply don't act on the more violent ones, instead we talk. When you are little, you're taught to talk things out rather than fighting. Sometimes the most basic lessons can save a life or even a nation. All you have to do is start with a few little seeds of hope, compassion, diplomacy and faith. Faith, that with time things will get better. You just have to give it a nudge to get it started.
    - Mollie Rardin, 7th grade, Stellar Secondary School, Anchorage, AK.

I picked up the poster by Mollie Rardin at Stellar Secondary School today. It will be mailed to LCI for the contest by tomorrow.

I met with the principal, Dale Evern, for a while to set a time for the presentation. I found out that Mollie is the daughter of two ASD teachers. He was very pleased with the interest at Stellar - about a dozen participants and thought that Mollie's satementabout her work (below) was quite mature for a 13 year old girl. I think we were all impressed with her insight.

A copy of the photo is attached for your reference and possible usage. I am working with Jim and Sally to arrange the presentation ceremonies at our eight (8) participating schools.
